Humans ache for independence as soon as we can walk and talk. It’s the eternal quest written in our dna. It’s critical to our development that we are the captain of our life or else we end up following a direction set by someone else. The authors of the Declaration of Independence were acutely aware of the need to set the direction of the 13 colonies as opposed to a king across an ocean. They felt that to be a leader meant that the government should add at least as much value back as it took. Otherwise it left a permanent debt between the government and its citizens.
Independence is such a vague term when you come down to it though. Independent thought, that is more specific. As we muddle through these trying times, group thinking is hard to escape. The independent thinkers that founded this country had to use logic and critical thinking to accomplish what they did, I think, in the hope that it would inspire the generations to come to think independently and keep our leaders on a good path.
Independent thinkers do not accept half truths and hyperbole. They deal in facts and consequences. Independent thinkers are often on the outside of the status quo, much like our emerging industry once was. As I watch the new industry take shape, I’m seeing a lot of group thinking taking hold. The type of thinking really that brought us to this place we find ourselves now. We battle a broken healthcare system that values the bottom line over anything else. A pharmaceutical industry given license by the FDA to poison our bodies and minds. These two broken industries are constantly propped up and buoyed by our leasership. It’s pretty dire times we live in and our little emerging industry was poised to be something different. The movement towards legalization of cannabis began as a solution to the problems that our health care did not solve and will not solve because health care is not about healing our bodies and minds, it’s about a bottom line number.
Those of us still guided by the movement that brought us here are struggling in this environment. This isn’t why we came to here. This isn’t why we broke the law, stood up and fought back. This isn’t why we risked our freedom, this is what we were fighting against the whole time. It’s important that our community understands the fight we are against now. It’s the corporate take over that has to be stopped. That where you, the consumer, comes in. You are the decider, it’s your choice who wins this battle and it won’t happen at the voting booth, it never has. This battle is won by the companies you support with your dollars. We need you to know that every dollar you put into this industry is a vote for who will succeed, who will rise to the level that gives them power to do what we came here to do. Heal our bodies and minds in the hope that it will inspire the generations to come to think independently and keep our leaders on a good path. Just like we did at the birth of our nation.
